The Box & POP invite you to join us for an exciting afternoon of discussions, showcases, creativity, and funding around Plymouth’s High Streets, community engagement and heritage.
The community event will be in the Simmons Learning Room at The Box on Friday 24th March 2023 12.30pm – 16.45pm. We will hear from Historic England, and Professor Dan Mauldin who will talk about the architecture of our high street, and High Street Sparks grantees from Round 1 & 2 who are using their funding to make the High Street a safer and more accessible space:
- Joe Meldrum, Plymouth Design: How can locals and tourists develop a greater appreciation of our conservation zone? Joe was awarded £2,460 to produce a map of the best of our post war buildings. Featuring beautiful illustrations, the map will be of use to tourists and residents alike.
- Phyllis McNally, Founder Community Horizons CIO: Community Horizons CIO was awarded a £5,000 grant to develop an art project for black and global majority women living in Plymouth. A large-scale artwork facilitated by female artists will explore the barriers women experience with accessing the high street.
- Author Becca Talemaimaleya has been awarded £2,100 to bring story plays to the city centre this spring. Becca is adapting two children’s books she has written (‘I Can Keep Trying’ and ‘I Can Calm Down’) in partnership with the Above Bounds Theatre Collective. Together they will also use interactive games and activities to work with families with young children to explore topics such as resilience, emotional ‘grit’ and mental health.
Professor Daniel Maudlin is a specialist in the historic environment – from landscapes to objects – with a background in the heritage sector (Historic Environment Scotland). His work combines historical geography with material culture. In this talk, he helps us understand better what motivated Patrick Abercrombie when he was designing the New Plymouth after the war and how 1960s modernism would have been something he may well have disliked. Dan hopes that his presentation inspires community groups and individuals with ideas for projects which they can develop through High Street Heritage Sparks.
There will also be the opportunity to take part in a workshop session dedicated to applying for the final round of High Street Sparks funding (grants of up to £2,500). Bring along your ideas and Susan will work with you to begin drafting your funding application!
The day is free to everyone and lunch and drinks will be provided!
